Bad Credit And Ways To Repair It
Bad credit doesn't have to be forever. You may have heard that even one missed or late payment can destroy your credit rating for up to seven years. Let's start by debunking that particular myth. Any credit counselor can tell you that while missed and late payments, along with charged-off credit card debts and defaulted loans may remain on your credit record for varying lengths of time (up to seven years), most creditors will put far more emphasis on your current credit history than your past mistakes. The further in your past your bad credit history is, the less it will affect your ability to get a loan now.

The time to start repairing your bad credit is immediately. If you've missed payments on loans or credit cards recently, your first - and most important - step should be to contact the credit card company. The credit card company would actually far rather NOT report your missed payments. They want to keep your business and they want your money. Your very best option to start repairing your bad credit report is to work out a payment plan with the credit card company that will catch up your payments as quickly as possible, and request that the credit card company report the repayment to the credit reporting agency.

What if it's already too late? If the blotches on your credit report that got you tagged as a bad credit risk were due to a situation that created extenuating circumstances, you can contact the credit reporting agency and request that a note be attached to your credit report explaining the situation. Remember though, that while a single bad credit report from a credit card company - or even several in a short period of time - can be explained, most creditors will be looking for evidence that the situation has changed. Make arrangements to repay balances, and be certain to keep your credit spotless from here on out.

How much of a difference will it make to bring your credit card payments current, and keep them there? According to a finance agent who often does pre-approvals for mortgages, if the bad credit is a fairly recent development in an otherwise reasonably good credit history, qualifying for a home loan with bad credit can be as simple as bringing all loan payments current, and maintaining a payment schedule for four consecutive months.

If your history of bad credit is more severe, you may benefit from the assistance of a non-profit credit repair agency. They can help you work out arrangements with creditors and set you on the road to repairing your bad credit history.
