Repairing Your Credit - With Or Without Credit Counseling
Debt counseling services are sponsored by most creditors and most are nonprofit organizations, though some are not. You must have a source of income before you can contact a debt counselor service, after which the counselor will often contact your creditors to inform them that you are trying to repay your debt and existing credit loans. The service will then create an agreement that fits within your budget. When the creditors receive your money, the counselor will request that the creditors deduct a small amount to pay for their services. Some, though not most, counselors will waive the interest on your balance and if you cannot meet your monthly payments, you may be required to pay late fees.
With this in mind, the best solution for repairing your credit is to take control of the situation yourself and get out of debt without additional complications. Purchasing minimal groceries and limiting expenses on other items will increase available funds. You can also decrease the amount spent on house cleaning items. Soap and water is sufficient, or laundry detergent can be used to clean carpets and windows, for example. It is often a waste of money to purchase multiple products each with specific tasks, which advertising wants you to believe to be a necessity. One product can oftentimes handle multiple tasks. You can also cut back on travel and the number of trips which saves on gas mileage, meals and hotels. Anytime you cut back, you are one step closer to getting out of debt and repairing your credit as long as the money spent is being applied toward your bills. Hold off on trips or purchasing items for your home until your bills are paid.
If you are finding it difficult to pay your monthly payments, contact your credits and explain the situation. Many, though not all, will work with you to find a solution rather than risk no payment and a total loss. This is not true of all creditors, though, as some do not care and simply want their money. The best way to handle your debt and creditors is to pay off the most significant bill first followed by the others, one at a time. Temporarily terminate those bills that are not necessary, such as cable or satellite, other entertainment, or even the internet if not used for work, until your bills are paid. If you can curb your spending and rid of destructive financial habits, debt or credit consolidation may be an option.
Bills are simply a part of life and avoiding them is not a solution to repairing your credit, and hence debt counseling is not the best choice for eliminating your debt.
Do not wait to seek consumer credit counseling after the debt collectors are already at your doorstep each morning. Opt for credit counseling as soon as you realize you cannot pay your bills and other credit loans on time or cannot meet the required monthly minimum. Credit counseling may help improve your financial discipline and give you some ideas on how to better manage your debt. However, it is important to choose the right credit counseling service as they are not all merit.
Be careful with counseling services that charge you more than the usual ten dollar advanced fee, and you should avoid services offering to settle or eliminate your debt with little or no money. They are not legitimate. It would be a smart decision to confirm that the company is registered with either the National Foundation for Credit Counseling or the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agency. Locating a good service is not the end. Be sure to follow-up and ensure that the payments you make to the counseling company are forwarded to your creditors on time. Late or absent payments will still reflect poorly on you credit report, and clearly you would be better without these damaging services of such an unethical organization.
Credit counseling services have always been viewed as double-edged sword, serving as both a help and a hinder. It helps you manage and lower your debt, but also damages your reputation with creditors. However, the benefits of consumer credit counseling outweigh the negative consequences. Though there may be a few creditors hesitant to extend you credit or loan you money again, many will be willing once you have paid off your previous debts with the assistance of credit counseling. When research for the proper company, though, it is important to choose a service that does not hurt your credit rating even further. Some companies simply inform your creditors that you have begun credit counseling, while others tag your credit as delinquent.
Credit counseling works well in most cases, but will not of use if you are too far in debt and near bankruptcy. Finally, it is important that you curb spending urges, since the benefits gained from the credit counseling will be lost if you have not learned to better manage your finances and avoid the debt situation that lead you to credit counseling in the first place.
