Individual Health Insurance Plans
The rising premiums on health insurance plans are making them almost unattainable for the average person. Even if the company you work for helps out with the costs of the health insurance premiums every month, you still might not be able to afford it. It is bad enough for people that work for large companies to pay their premium every month, but for individuals that work for themselves, health ins... Read insurance article

Purchasing Health Insurance Direct or Through Agent
Buying direct to save money on your health insurance is virtually a myth. More and more there are ads on the television and radio leading potential customers to believe that they will save money purchasing directly from an insurance company. In most instances, the insurance company is actually trying to make more money rather than save you money.

Health insurance premiums are regulated by state insurance departments. This ensures that all consumers are treated equally. Whether you purchase the plan directly from the insurance company or you purchase it from an agent, the price must be the same, provided the plans are quoted with the same data, such as area, ages, number of people to be insured.

So why would the insurance create this sort of illusion? The insurance company profits more selling directly to the insured. The insured does not pay over and above the policy premium price for an agent. An agent is paid by the insurance company in the form of a commission. The commission has already been figured into the premium amount, whether you elect to purchase from an agent or direct from the insurance company, you will pay the same premium.

Having an agent could be a huge advantage. An agent's job is to provide you guidance and help with your insurance needs. Health insurance is very important and complex. All plans are not created equally. Policies are typically written in legal terms that most people are not accustomed to reading. Let a health insurance agent help you better understand exactly what you are buying to protect you from financial burden.

Basic services such as claims and policy changes will likely be handled much quicker through an agent. Rather than waiting on hold for hours to have a claim mistake corrected, ask your agent to help you with the situation. Chances are, the agent will get it done with less time and work invested on your part.

You are putting money back into the community by obtaining an agent, rather than going direct. The commission will be paid to someone, either to the insurance company or the community agent, you make the decision.

Which ever option you choose to purchase your health insurance, the price for an exact policy should be the same.

Managed Care Health Insurance

If you are a part of a managed care health insurance plan, such as a PPO or HMO plan, you are probably familiar with the terms "in-network" and "out-of-network".

It is important to realize that the network provider list is subject to change at any time. It is the insured's responsibility to keep up to date with the in-network providers. This can be a big task, but in the end you won't regret doing a little extra work.

If you are enrolled to a PPO plan and use a doctor who is not part of the network you may be subject to a hefty additional out of pocket expense. If you are enrolled to an HMO plan, you may not be provided with any coverage for services performed by an out-of-network provider.

You can prevent this from happening. Never trust a provider book, once again, the list can change at any time, without notice. We suggest that you do one of the following:

Search your PPO/HMO network's website.
Call your insurance company direct for provider approval. (Most Dependable)
Call your doctor's billing department

These three are your most reliable source to ensure the provider is still active in the network. We most suggest calling the insurance company for direct approval. If you use this method the insurance company can coordinate your whole visit with the facility. You may ask, "Why would I want approval on the whole visit?", For example: You are scheduled for a surgery, the surgeon may be included in the network, but the anesthesiologist may not be, which would make you responsible for out-of-network charges from the anesthesiologist. If you allow the insurance company to coordinate the visit, they will likely set your appointment time up with a network affiliated anesthesiologist is available. If you have a favorite long time family doctor, but find that the doctor is not included in the network, you can refer the doctor to the network. Either have the doctor contact the network and complete the necessary steps to join the network or simply call your network and have them contact the doctor. This may take some time, but is often successful.
