Generating Traffic For List Building
Link building is an extremely popular method of gaining both traffic and search engine popularity. Search engine popularity can also increase traffic, if your website is listed in the top 10 or 20 natural search results for a particular keyword. Link building via article marketing is extremely powerful and is covered in the section on article marketing. Other ways to increase the number of incoming links to your web site:

Network with other web site owners that have a similar demographic but perhaps a non-competing product. Offer to link to their website from yours in exchange for a link to your squeeze page from their web site. This should be done on a one-by-one basis, and any link exchange services should be strictly avoided.

Submit your site to web site directories. To find directories in your niche, simply type your niche topic and the phrase ''web site directory' into your favorite search engine, and then go to each of the sites and submit your web page.

Search Engine Traffic

To receive search engine traffic you need to be listed in the major search engines, and employ tactics that will help your web site rise to the top of the search engine listings. One obvious method is PPC, which has already been covered. However, the free, or natural search engine results can drive a lot of traffic your way, when you optimize your listing in search engine results. When you write articles or engage in other methods of building back links to your web site, the search engines will generally give you higher search engine rankings. You also want to be sure that your title, description, and keyword tags on your web page are optimized for search engines, and that you include your main keywords in the text of your web page. Another method of gaining entry (although this will not affect your rankings, per se) into the search engines is to submit your web site or squeeze page directly to the various search engines.

You can either do that one at a time, by hand, or you can use a search engine submission service. Many of them offer a free or lost cost version, with a limited number of submissions, and a more expensive version with more exposure. Your Email Signature

One effective place to advertise which costs absolutely nothing and requires no intervention is your email signature. You simply go into the signature editor in your email account, and create a signature that includes name and your squeeze page or web site address. This will work for you even when you forget that it is there.

Offline Advertising

This may seen counterintuitive, but think about this for a moment. What is one of the biggest complaints about advertising online? There is just too much competition, right? You feel like people are really click happy. And maybe they are, a little. They still buy, eventually, so who cares? But imagine if you advertised offline? Imagine if instead of getting to your site by surfing or reading articles or otherwise utilizing the web, they were to see your ad in a local newspaper, like something about it, and logon to their computer for the express purpose of finding out more about you. Do you think this customer is less likely to be surfing for the best deal? Or the lowest price? They went online, not to look for a product like yours, they are looking for yours. How do we know? They logged on just to go to your site. Maybe they don't even like the internet. Instead of getting 100 emails a day like you and I get, they only get 1 or 2, or maybe none at all. When you send them an email, your email is the only one in their inbox. Do you think they are going to be more excited to read your email than someone who has 50 or 100 emails in their inbox when they sit down to read email? Of course they are.

There is a gold mine in offline advertising. All you have to do is try it out.

Best Traffic Generating Techniques

One important thing to remember when you are choosing which traffic generation techniques to use is that not every traffic generation technique works well for everyone. You must choose traffic generation techniques that work well for you. In addition, you cannot effectively try 15 different traffic generation techniques the very first week and get any success with any of them. You must simply choose 2 or 3 and work on them. Get to know how they work. Test them. Monitor everything you do. Know where your leads are coming from. If a particular source is effective, spend more time and money on it. If a lead source is not, then you must choose to move on to something else or make changes to the campaign. Sometimes small changes to the opt in page or to the ad script are all that is necessary to double or triple your response rate--and that can mean the difference between profit or loss. Be willing to make changes. Never feel like you have to keep doing it one way because that was your initial decision. Now, on the other hand, you cannot jump around day after day constantly trying something new. Pick a few traffic generation techniques and become an expert at each of them. Know why they work, how they work, and what happens when you make changes to them.

You also need to think about the type of subscriber you are looking for and where they spend their time. For example, if you are targeting people who want to get more traffic to their web site, then a traffic exchange or safe list might be the way to go. Why? What do you know about the people who spend time clicking to get traffic to their site or reading emails to get traffic to their site? The most important thing to them is that they get more traffic. So what do you promote to them? A free ebook about how to generate more traffic. Or an ecourse about how to get more traffic.

Now let's think instead that your main product is some type of specialized hair product. You need to be advertising where people gather that are interested in improving the condition of their hair. Traffic exchanges or safe lists won't cut it, nor will co registration leads or exit traffic. But what would be effective would be posting in hair care forums or writing articles and submitting them to directories that have a hair care category. This might be a good category for PPC advertising. Highly targeted classified ads or ezine ads could both be effective for your hair care product. What do I mean by highly targeted? Place the ads in hair care ezines or in hair care-oriented classified advertising. You may pay more, but paying more is relative. If you spend $35 to place a small classified in a general use source and get no business, but you spend $135 in a highly targeted source and receive 5 sales, which was really most expensive? So think hard about where your target market spends their time, and advertise there.
