I am sure you have heard of ''Link Farms'; these are web sites that are created solely for the purpose of tricking the search engines into high rankings. This type of technique has become uncovered by all of the major SE's but there are still those who choose to test them. It is very important to avoid these types of sites as they will not only do you no good they will most likely hurt your SE rankings.

There are also link-building programs that anyone can join and exchange reciprocal links with one another. These programs are usually built with very good intentions and if used correctly could be very beneficial to everyone involved. Unfortunately many that take part in these programs find ways to take advantage so you must be very cautious when partaking in them.

The best way to get quality link partners is to find high-ranking sites that are relevant to yours manually. Once you have chosen some good sites you just send them e-mail or use their ''link to us' link and request a link exchange. Just like every other technique you still need to be cautious. Take a look at their link page. If it is more than two clicks away from their front page then the link to your site will probably not do you much good. But if the link page has a high rank then it could be of value. You have to research a little before you partake in any link exchange.

Another thing that you have to look out for are ''nofollow' tags. These are tags that are placed in the link code that tell the search engines not to follow the link. Someone can place your link on his or her page and it looks great but if they have this tag in the code you will not gain from it. In order to check for this in Internet Explorer just click on the ''view' tab at the top left and then select ''source' in the drop down menu. This will show you the entire html code for that page. You can use the source code from other people's sites as an example for any type of link or feature you may be interested in as well.

Many people pay for links to be placed on others sites. This can be extremely profitable and boost your rankings if done with the right sites. If you choose to go this route just be sure to check for the things mentioned above and do not go overboard. Although paid linking can be very helpful it can also hurt you if done excessively. If you have a relatively new web site and the SE's notice that your site has gained a huge amount of links at once they will penalize you. The best way to do it is to find them at a slow but steady pace.

If you always keep these tips in mind and never slack off with the promotion of your web site you will notice a steady increase of visitors.

Making Your Keywords Work For You

In the field of editorial photography, photo researchers no longer search for pictures by looking at images (your eyes begin sagging after a while!). Instead, they search first, for words. Rarely do they do a one-word search (they'd receive thousands of hits). They usually use a three or four word search, and sometimes five or six words.

When you attach keywords to each of your images, keep that in mind. Try to anticipate what combination of keywords a photobuyer might use his/her search.

Since text description takes up very little space in a database*, be generous in your use of words to describe each image. Also, remember to include colloquial descriptions: In California it's a "carpet," in Wisconsin, it's a "rug." In Alabama the word is "flying;" in New Jersey it's "aviation."

HINT: Stay away from trite descriptions and keyphrases that are too general. The phrase "Infant child and mother" may bring 2,000 hits. A better description would be, "Infant soiled diapers distraught mother" ** (or whatever appropriately describes the scene).

* The phrase, " Four score and seven years ago, our fathers..." takes up 32 bytes. A normal 8 meg image takes up 8,000,000 bytes.

** No need to include prepositions.

NOT GOOD:

The following keyphrases are too generic. They need one or two additional modifiers to make the description more specific. Typical modifiers would be: where the activity is taking place (name the city, park, resort, etc.) If it's at a school, business, industry, church, synagogue, mosque, and this also, GET SPECIFIC. That's what the researcher does! Otherwise these are too general, and they would be lost in hundreds of responses and probably never seen by the researcher or buyer.
