You need to pick a keyword or phrase to optimize your site for that is not incredibly general. For example, if your site is about custom golf club, don't try to optimize your site for golf. I would not even optimize it for custom golf clubs. I would focus on a more narrow area like, custom built sand wedges or something to that nature.

Most likely if you have a good site it will already optimize itself for custom golf clubs and golf anyway. Plus there is going to be such heavy competition in these areas that it is going to be hard to achieve a first page ranking anyway.

Secret #3 - Don't overuse your keyword or phrase

You don't need to throw in your target keyword or phrase in every place it will fit. Put it in your title tag, in the header tag, and then use it a few times in your website content. That is all you need and the search engines will eat it up.

Secret #4 - Use free articles from content sites to optimize your site

Search and find well written free articles about a similar topic to your website and offer them on your website for your visitors to read. Most of the authors that post to free content sites have already optimized their articles for a certain keyword or phrase. By adding their article to your site you will be increasing your chances of the search engines picking up your site for that same keyword or phrase.

Secret #5 - Name your domain name correctly

If your trying to optimize your site for custom built sand wedges, then buy a domain name for the page you are trying to optimize and name it custombuiltsandwedges.com. This is what many of the major search engines like, especially Google. This alone can get you on the first page of the results sometimes.
