The Wise Affiliate Marketer
I began affiliate marketing almost exactly a year ago. Fortunately, I have to say that I am in the black when it comes to making money from affiliate marketing. However, it has taken nearly a year and some hard learned lessons that have kept me in the black. Here are a few issues that have come up for me and have made me wiser in my attempts at becoming a money making affiliate marketer:

Is a website really necessary?

One of the issues I think I notice most about affiliate marketing is that it is a business and because affiliate marketing is a business, it needs to be treated as such. As an online business, one of the main things the serious affiliate marketer needs to consider is having a website of their own.

Having your own website or many website allows you to do several things. For one a website allows you to control the content and the landing pages. If you are simply using the affiliate links in the search engines, you have no choice but to accept the landing page the vendor provides you. The other advantage of having your own website is that you can use it to market several similar products allowing the consumer to make comparisons for themselves. Secondly, you can use your own website to create subdomains for different products or different topics. This technique works well especially when using ppc advertising. The use of subdomains works well because you can put the product name as the subdomain. The technique I find that works really well is to have a theme centered website with a keyword in the domain name. This technique alone has saved me a considerable amount in ppc advertising and the cost of registering the domain is offset by this savings.

Ingore the hype

Whenever something changes in ppc advertising or a new scheme is devised to make money with affiliate marketing, a new guide generally comes out that is strictly hype. Those that write the guides are usually targeting those desperate to make money and the claims made about what the product will do are highly exaggerated as not all who do what the products tells you to do will have the same results. Sometimes what the products instruct you to do are nothing more than a spam or splog tactic or even worse a terms of agreement violation that will get your affiliate account cancelled.

If you treat your affiliate marketing endeavors as a business, you don't need to buy into the hype. Basically, if you continue to grow your business by becoming a savvy business person through experience, then you won't need the hype. The sales will come as you gain more experience and build your business.

Try different tactics on your own

In order to keep your business growing as you explore affiliate marketing you need to continually come up with ideas on how to market your affiliate products. This is perhaps one of the crucial aspects of affiliate marketing and the reason why guides that are completely hype work so well. If you cannot come up with ideas on how to best market your affiliate products, you may as well give up the business because you need to be able to change as the internet changes and having ideas of your own is a way to do this. It all comes down to ideas and experimentation.

Learn from successful affiliate marketers

While buying guides that are just hype and reactionary is not a good idea, getting ideas on how to market your affiliate product from those that have experience is a good idea. Success of the affiliate marketer should be judged in terms of longevity in the business and whether they have been able to weather the storms of marketing on the web, not just in terms of how much money they have made in the short term.

Remember what it's like to be a buyer

I think one aspect that affiliate marketers forget is what it's like to be the buyer. You might be able to succeed with being dishonest, but honesty wins out overall because the consumer does not want to feel cheated and if you are dishonest, the chances of the buyer feeling cheated are greater than honesty. At first honesty may seem like it's hurting your business, but building a good name for yourself will go a long way with return visitors and customers.

Purchased Traffic and Purchasing Links

When you have just developed your website, you are probably wanting to dive right in and get all the traffic you can get. However, many new webmasters make the mistake of spending their hard-earned money by buying traffic. All of those advertisements for guaranteed traffic can look great. The only problem is will this traffic generate sales. Well, this is something many new webmasters do not look at very carefully.

They see the words "Guaranteed Traffic" and they automatically see dollar signs. Generally, the dollar signs they see are nothing more than a dream. You see, what usually happens is that these webmasters go ahead and purchase this guaranteed traffic. Well, then the traffic does come, their daily hits rise astronomically, but they simply cannot figure out why their sales have not increased, why they are not making any money.

They just cannot figure out what happened. I mean, we all know that in order to make money we have to have traffic right. Well, yes, you need traffic to generate income this is true. However, it is also true that the traffic just cannot be any person on the internet. The key to generating income on your internet is not only traffic. No, the real key is what is called "Targeted Traffic".

Targeted traffic is essential in order to achieve success on the internet and generate your desired profit. What is targeted traffic? Well, simply put targeted traffic are those who have a real interest in what you have to offer. What happens when you buy traffic? While you might be getting hits, nine of ten people that visit your website have no real interest in what you have to offer.

For example, you might be offering pet supplies on your website. However, 90% of the people that come from this purchased traffic, will not have a pet or any interest whatsoever in pet supplies. What good does that do you or your website? None, at all. So what you need to do instead is obtain targeted traffic. These people will have interest in pet supplies, will have pets, and will be looking for exactly what you have to offer.

Your targeted traffic can be obtained in many different ways. However, purchasing guaranteed traffic is generally not one of them. Typically, this will require keyword optimization of your website content, Search Engine Optimization of your website, and even article marketing. Other methods can be used as well, such as Pay Per Click Advertising, advertising in ezines, and link exchanges.

Remember the key is getting traffic to your website, but making sure that the traffic has interest in your website, products, services, and what you have offer.
