Key issues with URL parameters while doing SEO

What is a url parameter? This can be one of the questions of SEO experts who are new to the world of SEO and don’t clearly understand what SEO Singapore does then why not get it cleared for them!

URL parameters are special set of codes which are written immediately after the question mark/domain address in any url. These codes are set dynamically enabling an endless number of requests/views. They are also well known as query strings.

The common example you can find is in any e-commerce website which has a product in it. This helps identify the url of a particular product as the product id is passed in that url as query strings. This is easy for programmers but difficult for webmasters. Let’s see some of the problems associated with this.

Keyword cannibalization

Keyword cannibalization is a widely-spread website internal information structure (mostly problematic) that occurs when multiple subpages are heavily targeting one and the same key term. Suppose a situation arises when due to keyword cannibalization Google gives a high ranking to a page which is less important for your website, this in-turn gives a distorted and hassled Google Analytics chart. This is one of the key issues faced due to url parameters.

Duplicate content

A duplicate content in SEO refers to a term in which same content is available for multiple url’s. These url’s only increase its number and have no importance in bringing the site up the rank in search engine. Once the search bots sees a duplicate url, dilemma arises as to which page shall be indexed, and the overall ranking along with the result gets mingled.

One point to be clearly understood is that the root cause of any downfall should be diagnosed closely. Make it very clear that-is the decrease in ranking really due to url parameters? If yes, then follow the below procedures to overcome it.

Steps to overcome url parameters issue

SEO friendly url’s are those which do not contain any special characters (?, -, = ) in it. Make sure your website url is not in this format. While rendering a post to user, always try to use the ‘title’ of the respective post as a url parameter, rather than the post id.

Here is an example

Always use the site’s robot.txt to disallow the posts, pages, contents to be crawled by the bots. These small steps if taken under consideration at the right point of time can create a huge difference in this competitive world of SEO.
